Five tips for choosing your "stand-by" restaurant
Recently, in Lima, Peru, I came across the most fabulous lunch counter ever in the HISTORY of lunch counters! As my enthusiasm only increased with each visit (and there were many), I thought I'd take a few minutes to break down what makes the perfect go-to, stand-by restaurant.
Parsley - not just a garnish
My mother, bless her heart, is a very simple cook. While growing up in northern Ontario, we were blessed with an enormous garden, and because we hardly had any money, she made almost everything from scratch. We canned, pickled, blanched and froze bags upon bags of vegetables for the winter. She also made her own bread and buns, and made baked beans from scratch.

Food belt favored over urban sprawl in Markham, Ontario
It's no surprise to me that when folks are given the information and the option that they would favor a vibrant, protected food belt for their community's future, instead of continued urban sprawl. A recent poll by Pollara for the Ontario Greenbelt Alliance reveals that 83 percent of those polled support the food belt, once the issues and ideas were explained to them.
