"Yes in my back yard" gardening project

Have you ever stood on your tiny apartment balcony and gazed longingly at your neighbour's huge, unused backyard, plotting how you'll slip across the fence under the cover of night to plant a few vegetables? No? Maybe that's just me. However, if you want to garden, but don't have any space, The Stop in Toronto has a program for you.

The Stop is launching Yes In My Back Yard (YIMBY) to connect folks who have land to offer with folks who want to garden. It's only a pilot program at this point for the 'hood surrounding the Green Barn, located at St. Clair and Christie. However, it's an Idea to Grow if I've ever seen one.

YIMBY participants will have access to a tool library, seedlings in the spring, educational workshops, and opportunities to meet and learn from other gardeners in the neighbourhood. Gardeners and garden hosts will get to share in the harvest.

The most exciting part of this project, in my estimation, is the opportunity to not only connect people_with_land, but to connect people_with_people. YIMBY is a fantastic way to address isolation and loneliness that is all too prevalent in our communities.

For more information, you can either contact Liz Curran at The Stop, or visit their Web site. Stay tuned for more information as this exciting project unfolds. Our new food blogger here at FGE of "all things Toronto," Shana Hillman, is moving to that neighbourhood in April and plans to get involved.
