Sunday is the day that I sleep really late, have two coffees instead of one, slather my toast with double the honey and butter, practice yoga, go for a walk, and then sip wine while I set my schedule for the week. As I have an event to attend tonight, I'm a little early on the schedule setting. My calendar tells me that
Earth Day 2010 is coming up on Thursday. A little research later, and I have three fantastic food security-related Earth Day events/activities on my schedule.
Canadian readers:
Between now and Tuesday, you can go to the
CBC Web site and nominate a "Green Hero" from your community. I recommend nominating folks engaged in the important work of both protecting the Earth, and feeding folks. The nominees can be folks you're aware of in your neck of the woods who are contributing to positive change and encouraging those around them as well. You can find all the info you need to participate
here.
American readers (and Canadians with access to PBS):
All of us here in Canada know that the
BBC and
CBC are important community assets. Many folks might not be aware of just how fabulous
PBS in the U.S. can be - and let me tell you, folks, PBS engages in one hell of a fight to keep funding and stay on the air, as unlike CBC and BBC, it has an incredibly volatile funding structure.
Beginning on Earth Day, POV on PBS (that's a little tongue twister, eh?) will stream the entirety of
Food, Inc. for free for several days
here. However, the most exciting part, is that POV and Food, Inc. have teamed up to encourage folks to host community potlucks and screenings of Food, Inc. on Wednesday, April 21st. They have a whole
potluck party kit available to aid in your planning. (Sadly, I will not be hosting as my family is attending an
event with Elizabeth May that evening. However, I will be hosting a "Naked Lady" clothing swap and potluck on Friday night in honour of our dear Mother Earth.)
Toronto Readers:
On Earth Day, I will attend a book launch at the
University of Toronto. The book,
Foodies: Democracy and Distinction in the Gourmet Foodscape, looks fabulous and explores food as democracy in contrast with food as elitism. If you're interested in attending (or you're stalking me), you can register
here.
Okay, readers, what Earth Day events that focus on our relationship to food will you be attending?
