Squirrel on the plate

Oh, I'm a happy little beaver on this Sunday morning. Why? I was just reading the The Guardian, and it seems that the owner of a local Budgens supermarket in London has defended selling squirrel meat as a sustainable way of feeding people, saying it has a "lovely" taste. Horrified? Well guess what, folks - I grew up eating squirrel meat too!

What a relief to finally share this piece of odd news. What used to be a point of shame in my life is now, um, hip? Andrew Thornton, started selling the meat about five months ago after requests from customers at his Budgens store in Crouch End, north London. "There are too many squirrels around, we might as well eat them rather than cull them and dispose of them," he said. My thoughts exactly. My best buddy will freak out when she reads this, as she hates squirrels and equates them with rats. I think I actually saw her kick a squirrel once.

Mr. Thornton agrees with my family concerning the virtues of the squirrel on the plate. "I think it's lovely. It's a bit like rabbit. I think there will be a lot of fuss about this now, but in a few years it will become accepted practice that we eat squirrels. People don't bat an eyelid now about eating rabbit," he said.
