Subsidy hell

If you've been reading Folks Gotta Eat for long, you know that I really struggle with subsidies for industries that are environmentally destructive and/or obsolete. It reminds me of that movie from the late 80's, "Weekend at Bernie's," where they drag the dead guy around with them - propping him up and pretending he's still alive. I can't even talk about corn subsidies, as I get a twitch in my right eye.

AlterNet has a compelling piece that outlines the "10 Ways Your Taxes [U.S.] Pay for Environmental Devastation." I want to acknowledge that investments in forward-thinking, green technologies and industries are more than welcome, in my book. You see how we do that? We use the term "investment" when we talk about something we WANT, as it implies we will receive something for it in return. We use the term "subsidy" to talk about all the things that we prop up, just like old Bernie.

Want to take a guess on AlterNet's Top 10? Come on, you can probably nail most of them.
  • Highways
  • SUVs
  • Paper Mills
  • Commercial Fishing
  • Nuclear Power
  • Factory Farming
  • Corn Ethanol
  • Processed Foods
  • Coal
  • Oil
