Everything under one roof

Oh, Grist, what a fine online environmental magazine experience you are. Once again, you've introduced me to something new. However, I'm not sure if this one is an Idea to Grow, as something about hydroponics makes me feel icky. The project is known as Acropolis, and the folks behind it seek to grow, produce and sell food all under one roof.

From Grist: It's the soil-free, pesticide-free, and travel-free concept grocery store, urban farm, and restaurant, all rolled into one. Peruse the produce growing up the walls and pick what you like, while you have visions of tilapia dinners dancing in your head -- and swimming in the aquaponic floor tanks under your feet. The high-tech team behind Agropolis envisions "a world where your food is not transported a single mile to get to you." The only food-miles will be between the store and your dinner plate.

These folks aren't kidding around either. Check out their list of technological innovations from their website that they're applying to the urban garden and farmers' market concepts:
  • In collaboration with NASA [Yeah, I like to roll with NASA too], we will combine sensor and robotic innovations into the state of the art hydroponic systems.
  • We will research genetically modified organisms made specifically for a controlled agricultural setting. [Not sure I'm liking this one. Thoughts?]
  • We will integrate new advances in artificial lighting like LEDs into controlled agriculture.
Finally, our farm, unlike urban farms to date, will be a powerful consumer experience - aiming urban farming not simply at the environmentally conscious but also to those who simply enjoy fresh food.
