For those lazy summer mornings

I'm taking a break from the tomato posts to bring us back to my other favourite summer fruit - Peaches.  After last weekend's post about the peach crisp a reader Kerri commented that she likes to add pecans to her crumbles.  This got me to thinking.  Nothing says the south like peaches and pecans (or as they'd say "Peh-Kahns") and the two together?  Heaven.

Most mornings I don't even see my husband.  He goes into the office super early so he can get home and take the evening beagle walk shift (I take the mornings).  We scarf down cereal or toast or if we've got time maybe some yogurt, fruit and my granola while passing each other in the hall.  But weekends are a different story.  I love brunch and there is nothing better than a nice big breakfast and relaxing with lots of coffee, the Saturday paper and CBC radio.  I like a savoury brunch most of the time (Huevos Rancheros or Migas are my favourites) but the Hubs?  Well he has a sweet tooth, so I like to indulge him every now and again.

There's not really a recipe to this.  You all know how to make french toast or Pain Perdu.  Which just means lost bread but doesn't Pain Perdu sound fancier? It's just some day-old stale bread, a few eggs, milk or better yet a splash of cream and some cinnamon.  I like to soak my bread good and long so the inside goes all custardy and then fry it with lots of butter.

I fried some pecans in more butter and a pinch of cinnamon and then added a spoonful of white sugar and pulled them off the heat.  For Christmas the lovely Melanie gave me this awesome Peach n' Brandy syrup from Summerland Sweets in Okanagan Valley, British Columbia and boy was I glad to have saved it till now.  Wow.  But since I don't like to smell too boozy when I make my way to the farmers market later in the day I had my second slice with good old maple syrup.

Here it is in all it's candied pecan, fresh Ontario peaches and Peach n' Brandy syrup glory.  Good.  Morning.

Now that is the start to a good weekend if there ever was one.

Are you a sweet or savoury brunch lover?  What do you make to spoil your significant other?

Shana Hillman

Shana Hillman grew up in a small town in northern Ontario where she gained experience in animal husbandry and strawberry farming. She has called Toronto home for the last 13 years. She loves cooking, preserving and growing Beagle-resistant vegetables in her sunny backyard. Recent highlights have included cheesemaking on the kitchen counter and curing pancetta in the basement, much to the horror of her adoring, yet dubious husband, and to the delight of her two ravenous Beagles (who are now banned from the basement until further notice).

We are usually a waffle family for Sunday mornings but perhaps I have just been inspred to give Pain Perdu (with Peaches and candied pecans!) a try. Thanks for the idea, Shana!

I am absolutely torn down the middle with sweet vs savoury. (Although let's be honest, if it's a "brunch after a big night" it must be savoury (to go with my Bloody Caesar).)
I remember one day a friend salivating as she watched me crumble my last slice of bacon on a strawberry jammed toast triangle. And promptly ordered more toast so she could try it.
Sweet for me hands down are pancakes - any time, any kind, any place. And some OJ to cut the sweetness.
BTW thanks Shana - I got a bourbon peach hand pie recipe from smitten kitchen based on your recco and made tarts today - deee-lish!

Thanks for sharing ladies - I'm hungry already and headed out to brunch soon!

Sue - my favourite thing to do is get the 3 egg breakfast and dip my jam covered toast in the runny yolks of the sunny side up eggs - it makes Hubs CRINGE - he thinks it's gross. Wait till I try your bacon tip!! HA.
